Philip Simmons, The Poet Laureate of Iron

Philip Simmons who spent his boyhood on Daniel Island and became a world-renowned iron worker, is responsible for a myriad of decorative iron works found in and around the lowcountry. He left the island as a boy of eight years old to attend school in Charleston, and there he discovered his love of iron work walking to Buist School passing gates with intricate scroll work and windows with decorative screens.

Those of us who are lucky enough to live on DI see examples of his handicraft in many places, starting with the unique logo he designed for the Daniel Island Company. Beginning in 1938 until his retirement, Mr. Simmons designed and produced over 500 pieces of ornamental ironwork. He was known as a “poet in ironwork,” and there was no one who could match his expertise. To honor him, the new Berkeley County Elementary/Middle School will be named after Mr. Simmons.
